Energy Efficiency Today. Energy Tomorrow.
Our customers have told us that they’re looking for ways to reduce their energy costs and foster a healthy environment. That's why we’re working closely with partner organizations that inform the public about conservation, energy-efficiency practices, and renewable technologies that make a big impact in reducing our footprint on the environment.
Taking Positive Steps
The sources of energy we use in the Northwest Territories to turn on our lights, cook our meals, heat our homes and run our businesses have an effect on our environment.
NTPC is taking steps to limit these effects and improve our environmental performance. This includes changing our fuel mix and testing and expanding on renewable energies such as solar, wind and water (hydro).
Today, hydro electricity accounts for over 70% of all energy sold to our customers. It’s renewable, insulated from fuel price increases, and is emission free.
But hydro isn’t the only solution. We have also begun smart, targeted investments like converting to natural gas-fired turbines in Inuvik. Natural gas is a fuel that’s more environmentally friendly and available locally – an excellent alternative to shipping in diesel.
These steps add up to some impressive results: since 1990 we’ve reduced diesel consumption by over 60% and cut greenhouse gas emissions by 50%.
It’s a fact that producing electricity affects the environment. Our challenge is to minimize our impact while supplying electricity at the lowest cost possible.
