Street Light Conversions Completed in Fort McPherson and Tsiigehtchic

HAY RIVER (November 1, 2004) -- The Northwest Territories Power Corporation (NTPC) announced today that the “Street Light Conversion Project” has been completed in Fort McPherson and Tsiigehtchic.

NTPC is now in their second year of a five year program to replace “old mercury vapour” lights with new energy efficient “high pressure sodium” lights in communities throughout the Northwest Territories.

A total of 112 new energy efficient high pressure sodium lights were installed in the communities of Fort McPherson and Tsiigehtchic. Fort McPherson received 103 and Tsiigetchic received 9 new high pressure sodium lights. Both communities are now completely changed to the new energy efficient high pressure sodium lights

Street light energy consumption in Fort McPherson has dropped 41% for a cost saving of $18,000 on their electric bill. In Tsiigehtchic, consumption has dropped 22% for a cost saving of $3,000. This year the two communities combined to reduce “greenhouse gas emissions” by 33 tonnes of CO 2 equivalent emissions annually. Partial funding for the conversion was received from the Department of Resources, Wildlife and Economic Development’s Energy Conservation Program.

“The street light conversion program is a win-win situation for NTPC, the communities and the environment. The communities benefit from the cost savings on their power bill and the environment experiences a reduction in “greenhouse gas emissions” because less fuel is required to generate the electricity,” said Leon Courneya, President and CEO of NTPC.

Over the next three years, NTPC will continue to replace the old mercury vapour lights with new energy efficient high pressure sodium lights in the communities it serves.
