Power Outage in Yellowknife and Behchoko

Yellowknife (February 8, 2006)

The Northwest Territories Power Corporation (NTPC), experienced a power outage yesterday on the Snare Hydro line at approximately 9am that affected the City of Yellowknife and the Community of Behchoko. Power was restored with back up diesel generators to Yellowknife in approximately one hour and to the Community of Behchoko in three hours.

The cause of the outage is still under investigation however hydro power was restored to the City of Yellowknife by 5:30pm on Tuesday. Behchoko will be served by diesel generation from Franks Channel until the extent of the damage is known and repairs to the hydro line are completed.

NTPC personnel are flying by helicopter today to investigate the Behchoko hydro line.

NTPC would like to thank the residents of the City of Yellowknife and Northland Utilities for their assistance yesterday and also their customers in Behchoko for their continued support and understanding.
