Power to the Communities of
Rae Edzo

Yellowknife (January 18, 2006) – The Northwest Territories Power Corporation announced today that another temporary diesel engine is being installed at the Frank’s Channel Power Plant to ensure reliable power service to the customers of Rae Edzo.

At the present, the communities of Rae Edzo are operating on backup diesel due to the ongoing repairs to the hydro tower that partially collapsed on Saturday, January 14 due the heavy frost and ice conditions.

Randy Patrick, Director of the North Slave Region said, "The additional engine will ensure that NTPC has more than enough generating capacity to meet the electrical demand load of the two communities until hydro power can be fully restored."

Due to the remoteness of the tower and with the only assess being by air, completion of the repair work is expected to take approximately 14 days once the weather improves.

According to Patrick, NTPC staff is not only dealing with the remoteness and assess issues to the site, but also dealing with the weather conditions and the amount of daylight hours available at this time of year to safely conduct the work on the tower.

NTPC would like to thank the customers of Rae Edzo for their understanding, cooperation and their community efforts in conserving their use of power during this time.
