Hay River (March 9, 2006) - The Northwest Territories Power Corporation (NTPC) proudly announced today that the Corporation reduced its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in 2005 by 9,400 tonnes. This is a 10 percent reduction from the year before and a 44 percent reduction from 1991 levels, when NTPC began recording GHG emissions.
NTPC received Gold Champion Level Reporter Status for the sixth straight year from the Canadian Greenhouse Gas Challenge Registry for its 2005 GHG submission. In 1999 NTPC was awarded Best New Submission and in 2001 received the Electricity Utilities Sector Leadership Award for the corporation’s commitment to reporting and reducing GHG emissions.
In 2005, NTPC’s hydro facilities (Snare Falls, Snare Forks, Snare Cascades, Snare Rapids, Bluefish and Taltson) generated 70 percent of the Corporation’s entire electrical power, which was a 9 percent increase from 1991 levels.
Brian Willows, Director of Corporate Operations said NTPC is committed to further reducing its greenhouse gas emissions wherever possible. “NTPC will continue its implemented initiatives to maximize hydro generation, enhance the fuel efficiency of diesel engines, convert standard street lights to energy efficient high pressure sodium lights, utilize cleaner burning natural gas where possible (Inuvik Gas Project), provide residual heat systems and continue to provide public education programs to reduce customers’ power consumption. We will continue to implement new ideas and strategies to conserve fuel usage and subsequent emissions while openly reporting the Corporation’s progress and initiatives.”
NTPC accounts for less than 4 percent of the total GHG emissions generated for the entire Northwest Territories, according to the 2001 NWT Greenhouse Gas Inventory (April 2005).
