New Board Appointments at Northwest Territories Power Corporation

The minister responsible for the Northwest Territories Power Corporation, Jake Ootes, has announced four new appointments to the board of the Corporation.

"It is my belief that these appointments will help ensure that power continues to be delivered all across the North in a safe and reliable manner," Mr. Ootes said. The appointees are: Gordon Stewart (chairman), Simon Merkosak (vice chairman), David Simailak (director), and John Parker (director).

Gordon Stewart of Yellowknife is a 25-year northern resident. He has been involved with many businesses in the Northwest Territories, serving as president of Braden-Burry Expediting, Ltd. and as a board member of Diamond Logistics Ltd., among others. Mr. Stewart was first appointed to the Board in 1995. His appointment as Chairman of the Board is effective immediately to May 31, 2001.

Simon Merkosak of Pond Inlet will be resuming his duties as Vice Chairman. Mr. Merkosak completed his education in Churchill and Ottawa. After ten years in municipal administration, Mr. Merkosak became an active member of the business community. He served on the Community Futures Board and the Baffin Regional Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Merkosak has been on the board of the Power Corporation as a member, then vice chairman and acting chairman since 1996. His appointment is effective immediately until December 9, 2000.

David Simailak of Baker Lake has been re-appointed a Director of the Board. Mr. Simailak has been active in local politics and was instrumental in the startup of the Inuit Development Corporations in the Kivalliq region. He has been involved in several northern businesses. Mr. Simailak also serves on various boards, among them the Canadian Aboriginal Economic Development Program, the NWT Housing Corporation, and three Kivalliq-based development corporations. He was first appointed to the Board of the Power Corporation in 1998. His appointment is effective immediately until March 31, 2001.

John Parker of Vancouver Island has been re-appointed a Director of the Board of the Power Corporation. Mr. Parker has served as a member of the board since 1990. He graduated from the University of Alberta as a geological engineer and worked in the mining field until his appointment as deputy commissioner of the Northwest Territories in 1967. In 1979 he was appointed commissioner and served in that position until his retirement in 1989. He presently holds directorships on two other northern-based companies.

His appointment is effective immediately until March 31, 2001.
