At
a special awards ceremony held last night in Ottawa, the Northwest Territories
Power Corporation was one of 13 companies representing 12 industry sectors
that was honoured by the Voluntary Challenge and Registry Inc (VCR Inc.).
The VCR Inc. challenges Canadian business and government to voluntarily
limit and reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
This achievement follows on the heels of the Corporation retaining its
'Gold Champion Level Reporter' status that was announced last November.
"To receive this 'top of the class' honour from VCR Inc. is the
icing on the cake" said Leon Courneya, President & CEO of the
Corporation.
"It recognizes our commitment to the environment and we are very
proud to have received this national award from the Registry. It is
an excellent result given that we competed against a number of Canada's
electric utilities and can be attributed to the efforts of Corporation
staff implementing innovative solutions aimed at generating electricity
as efficiently as we can" said Courneya.
In 1990 the Corporation produced the equivalent of 114,710 tonnes of
carbon dioxide emissions. Since that time, the Corporation has made
significant changes to its generating infrastructures, which has dramatically
reduced emissions.
In 2000/01 the Corporation's GHG emissions were a significant 47% lower
than 1990/91 levels with only 61,145 tonnes produced.
The Corporation produces GHG primarily through the burning of fossil
fuels (diesel) to produce electricity and these gases do contribute
to climate change
To consistently reduce GHG emissions the Corporation has implemented
a number of initiatives such as enhancing the fuel efficiency of diesel
engines, installing residual heat recovery systems, maximizing hydro
generation, replacing standard street lights with energy efficient lamps
and advising customers on how they can conserve electricity.
Although greenhouse gases emitted by NTPC have been reduced more than
the Kyoto target of 6% below 1990 levels, the Corporation remains committed
to further reducing GHG emission levels in the future.
