The Northwest
Territories Power Corporation has awarded first year university scholarships
to two recent Yellowknife graduates. Michael Demko, from Sir John Franklin,
and Ricky Chan of St. Patrick High School, were selected for this year's
awards, based on their high graduating averages and their interest in
completing technical training.
Demko is taking
the co-operative computer science program at the University of Waterloo.
Chan is taking engineering at the University of Alberta.
In making the awards,
NWT Power President Leon Courneya highlighted each student's exceptional
marks in Grade 12 departmental exams and their community activities.
Demko builds computer games for recreation and is a member and coach
of the Yellowknife Speed Skating Club. Ricky Chan has been involved
in volunteer activities at St. Pat's.
The scholarships,
worth $2000 each, are designed to assist northern students with expenses
associated with first year university studies. Scholarships are available
to residents of the NWT and Nunavut to encourage students to take up
business and technical studies - computing, accounting, engineering
or environmental sciences.
Past recipients
of the scholarships include Jonathan Hazenberg of Fort Simpson, Leah
Campbell, Lindsey Cymbalisty and Gaeleen MacPherson of Yellowknife and
Michael Bill of Iqaluit.
