Iqaluit,
NU (October 8, 1999)
The Nunavut Employees Union will recommend its bargaining unit accept
a proposed three-year collective agreement with the NWT Power Corporation.
The deal, worked
out in Iqaluit after six days of bargaining, would see the approximately
50 unionized staff receiving a three per cent increase in wages each
year, effective January 1, 1999 to December 31, 2001.
"Our bargaining
team is unanimous in recommending that our members ratify this 3-3-3
per cent package," said Doug Workman, President of the Nunavut Employees
Union. "It solidifies the partnership with the Corporation and our members
in all 25 Nunavut communities."
"We're all pleased
with this agreement," said Derek Aindow, Director of Personnel for the
Power Corporation. "It provides continuity and job stability for employees,
especially in the context of decisions yet to be made on the long-term
future of the Corporation and power service in Nunavut."
The proposed contract
is the first three-year package in the Corporation's 11 year history.
It improves terms and conditions of employment, including an increase
of 10 per cent in location payments over the life of the contract. These
payments account for the differences in cost-of-living in various communities.
Also covered is
agreement by the Corporation for enhanced recognition, job security
and increased benefits for as many as 22 casual workers who assist in
power plant operation. This also reflects the growing electrical service
demands now underway in Nunavut's expanding economy.
The NEU anticipates
a ratification vote could be held by mid-November. Further details of
the proposed agreement will be withheld, to give union members the first
opportunity to see the package.
