Residential Energy Efficiency Project

Hay River (January 10, 2005) The Northwest Territories Power Corporation (NTPC) announced today the continuation of the customer “Residential Energy Efficiency Project” for the Deh Cho and North Slave regions. The project will provide free “home energy audits” for customers in the communities of Fort Liard, Fort Simpson, Jean Marie River, Nahanni Butte, Rae-Edzo, Rae Lakes and Wrigley.

The project will involve a home energy assessment that includes gathering data pertaining to insulation, space heating systems, hot water systems, number and condition of appliances, lighting, any exterior electricity applications such as vehicle block heaters and consumption of energy forms other than electricity. Lowering energy usage is the best way to lower overall utility costs.

The project will provide customers with information pertaining to home energy efficiency solutions, climate change and how energy conservation can make a difference and an opportunity to discuss the electricity service currently supplied to them by NTPC.

The residential energy efficiency project was developed by NTPC as a direct result of the company’s customer survey which indicated that customers wanted more information regarding energy tips for their home. NTPC to date has conducted 500 residential energy assessments in the 13 communities of the Delta-Sahtu region. The project has met with a great deal of success as participating customers have learned how to be energy conscious regarding their electricity usage in their home and how that knowledge can result in lowering their power bill.

Leon Courneya, President and CEO of NTPC said, “The customer residential energy efficiency project has been informative and beneficial for our customers because it has allowed them to better understand their energy usage and how that usage can lead to a potential cost savings on their power bill. Anytime we as a corporation can help our customers reduce their electricity usage it also benefits the environment as greenhouse gas emissions are reduced because less fuel is required to generate the electricity.”

The second phase of the residential energy efficiency project will start in late January.
