Trees and Power Lines

Stay Alert! Be Aware!

Trees that touch a power line are referred to as “danger trees”. They can sometimes act as a conduit to ground for electricity from a power line. If you notice that a tree is in contact with a power line:

  • Contact NTPC immediately
  • Keep away 10 meters (30 feet) from the wire and anything else that touches it
  • Warn others who may pass by until NTPC crew members arrive

Windy conditions and stormy weather

Trees or branches can interfere with power lines by tugging on them during wind storms. A branch that breaks in a storm and falls or flies into a power line can bring it down. Just because a power line is down doesn’t mean that it’s not still conducting electricity. If you notice that a power line is on the ground stay away from it and call NTPC as soon as possible.

  • Inspect your trees regularly for flaws or signs of decay.
  • Be aware of which trees and branches could grow into, fall on or fly into power lines.

Working with trees

Although the trees in the NWT don’t usually reach the heights of their southern relatives, you still need to be careful when you deal with trees.

  • When planting beside or directly under a power line, be sure that the type of tree is not one that will grow too tall. Better yet, don’t plant near a power line at all.
  • Pruning or working in trees that are near power lines can result in contact leading to injury or death. It’s best to call NTPC who can advise you on who to contact to remove the unwanted branches or tree.
  • Kids! Activities like building tree houses or tree climbing can be filled with imagination and adventure. But be aware of any branches that may be touching a power line. Trees should be fun, not shocking, and we want you to be safe at all times!
