NTPC has committed to a territory-wide program to replace high pressure sodium (HPS) street lighting with cost effective and energy efficient LED lighting. LED lights will cut operating costs in half. NTPC will share the savings with customers.
NTPC and the Community Government of Gameti collaborated on a pilot project that replaced 100-watt high pressure sodium lights with 50-watt high efficiency LED streetlights. LED lights last five time longer than HPS, and require less maintenance.
NTPC has committed to converting two communities to LED lighting per year. In addition, existing lights will be replaced as they fail. Lutselk'e and Jean Marie River are next on the changeover list.
