Energy Saving Tips
No Cost / Low Cost
- Break out the caulking. Air leakage represents 25% to 40% of the heat lost in an older home. Weather stripping and sealants will stop drafts, save money, improve comfort and protect the structure
- Turn down the thermostat. As a general rule, you will save 2% on your heating bill for every 1 °C you turn down the thermostat at night
- Indoor air can escape through electrical outlets. Place insulators behind the cover plates to prevent air loss
- Use area rugs on cold floors – if your feet are cold, your body will feel cold
- If you feel cool, put on a sweater rather than simply turning up the thermostat
- Let the sunshine in. On sunny winter days, open south facing blinds and drapes
Save Even More
- Shopping for a new heating system? Choose an ENERGY STAR® qualified model. ENERGY STAR® qualified oil and gas furnaces have annual fuel utilization efficiency (AFUE) ratings of 83% and 90%, or higher, making them up to 15% more efficient than standard models
- Add insulation to keep your home comfortable and energy efficient. Adding insulation to your attic and basement tend to give the biggest energy savings
- Choose ENERGY STAR® qualified windows when replacing or adding windows to your home. In addition to making you feel more comfortable, they reduce UV damage to interior fabrics and can help you save money on heating and cooling costs
- Consider using an electric blanket instead of a space heater. An electric blanket uses 90 per cent less power than a space heater
