Energy Saving Tips
No Cost / Low Cost
- Don't keep that old, inefficient refrigerator running in the basement for occasional refreshments. It could cost you $270 or more per year in electricity
- Set the temperature of your refrigerator for only as cool as you need (about 4 °C)
- Allow hot foods to cool before putting them in the refrigerator. Defrost frozen food in the refrigerator. It's safer than leaving it on the countertop and it will actually contribute to the refrigerator's cooling
- Don't overfill the refrigerator. This blocks air circulation and makes your refrigerator work harder and less efficiently
- Close the refrigerator door like Mom taught you. Check the refrigerator door's seal by closing the door on a $5 bill. If it's held tightly in place, the seal's OK; if not, the door should be adjusted or the seal replaced
- Clean your refrigerator coils and air intake grill every 3 months
- Keep your refrigerator out of direct sunlight and away from heat sources like a radiator, stove, or dishwasher. Also, avoid cold environments like an unheated porch or garage
Save Even More
- Time for a new refrigerator? Choose an ENERGY STAR® qualified model. Refrigerators are among the largest energy-consuming appliances in a home. A ten-year-old refrigerator can cost twice as much to operate compared to a new energy-efficient model of the same size
