Energy Saving Tips
No Cost / Low Cost
- Shorten your showers to cut hot water costs
- Install aerating, low-flow faucets and showerheads. Low-flow showerheads can make a big difference – especially if you can't bring yourself to take shorter showers
- Wash and rinse your clothes in cold water
- Repair leaky faucets. That little drip can add up to litres of water wasted every day
- Lower the temperature on your water heater. Turning your water heater temperature down 5 °C can save 3% of your energy costs
- Take more showers than baths
- Insulate the first 2 metres of the hot water pipes and the first 1 metre of cold water pipes connected to the water heater
- Use water efficient features on your clothes washer and dishwasher
- Turn off your electric water heater at the breaker panel if your house will be unoccupied for several days. It will start producing warm water again within 10 minutes of being turned back on, and you won't be paying to keep water hot while you are away
Save Even More
- Insulate or wrap your electric water tank, but be careful not to cover the thermostat. Follow the manufacturer's instructions or contact a professional. If you heat your water with oil, insulate your tank with the help of a professional
- Need a new water heater? Choose an ENERGY STAR® qualified model. While they may cost more initially than a standard water heater, the energy savings will continue for the lifetime of the appliance
- If you are in a diesel or natural gas community and have an electric hot water heater consider replacing it with a more efficient oil or gas hot water heater and save big on your monthly electricity bills. The Arctic Energy Alliance has rebates available to help with the cost of purchasing an oil or gas water heater in non-hydro communities
- Consider installing a drain water heat recovery system. Drain water heat recovery systems can save up to 40% on your water heating costs and are eligible for territorial government incentives through the Arctic Energy Alliance
- In the market for a new dishwasher or clothes washer? Consider buying an ENERGY STAR® qualified, water-saving model to reduce hot water use
- Supplementing your electric hot water tank with solar hot water can save a lot of energy during the summer months
