Lowest water level in recorded history increases costs

HAY RIVER, NT (September 3, 2014) – Record-low water levels on the Snare hydro system means significantly more diesel will be needed to provide Yellowknife and North Slave Lake area with power for the next ten months. This increase in diesel usage has prompted the Northwest Territories Power Corporation (NTPC) to submit an application to the Public Utilities Board (PUB) for a rate rider to cover this additional expense.

Mr. Mort Mitchnick, a highly-regarded mediator with more than 30 years of experience, has been chosen to assist the Northwest Territories Power Corporation (NTPC) and the Union of Northern Workers (UNW) attempt to conclude a new Collective Agreement. Residential customers who use 1000 kWh per month in the winter will see an increase ranging between approximately $4.00 and $7.50 per month. A table illustrating the impact on residential customers by rate zone is attached.
